menstrual freedom

A movement to dismantle the systems and barriers that prevent individuals from experiencing menstruation with dignity and autonomy.

why menstrual freedom

Language shapes reality. If we want a different future, we have to name it.

we’re inviting people everywhere to help advance a collective shift in how we talk about menstruation and what we believe is possible.

A world where periods hold no one back.

This is menstrual freedom.

the definition

A movement to dismantle the systems and barriers that prevent individuals from experiencing menstruation with dignity and autonomy.

Coined by Operation Period founder Manju Bangalore, menstrual freedom is rooted in confronting and abolishing the power structures that shape menstrual injustice and building a future where agency and possibility are the standard.

the origin of menstrual freedom

Coined by Operation Period founder Manju Bangalore, menstrual freedom expands the scope of what this movement can achieve. Building upon the foundation of menstrual equity, including access to menstrual products, facilities, and education, menstrual freedom asks us to address the root causes of injustice, not just its symptoms.

Access is the floor, not the ceiling.

When we center hygiene and product access alone, we risk stopping short of a long-term strategy: one that confronts and transforms the systems that create inequity in the first place. Menstrual freedom names that next step.

Inspired by Black feminist abolitionist thought and reproductive justice frameworks, menstrual freedom envisions a future where the social, political, and economic conditions that shape menstrual experiences are fundamentally reimagined, and where dignity, autonomy, and agency are fully realized.

Menstrual freedom requires:

  • dismantling systems of oppression that limit bodily autonomy

  • confronting stigma, silence, and cultural taboos

  • challenging industries and institutions that profit from inequity

  • designing systems, spaces, and futures that include menstruators by default

This includes addressing the intersecting impacts of misogyny, racism, transphobia, ableism, climate injustice, and class inequality.

Join us in advancing menstrual freedom for all, so we can live in a world where periods hold no one back.

the menstrual freedom pledge

I believe menstruators deserve more than survival, silence, or stigma.

I believe in a future where all people can experience menstruation with dignity, autonomy, safety, and full participation in society.

I recognize that menstrual injustice is shaped by larger systems of oppression, including misogyny, racism, transphobia, ableism, climate injustice, and economic inequality.

I commit to advancing menstrual freedom by:

  • using language that expands what this movement can achieve

  • challenging stigma and silence

  • supporting systems-level change

  • helping build a future where periods hold no one back

together, we will achieve menstrual freedom.
